Out of 125 towns and cities across Bengal, 76 have achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status. All towns in North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly, Burdwan and East Midnapore were declared ODF zones. Nadia was the first district to attain ODF status in 2015. The figures are not just estimated by the state agencies but also by third party independent agencies.
Bengal now has the highest number of ODF zones in the country. Mass awareness programmes conducted by respective civic bodies and initiatives taken up by the district magistrate’s office helped to achieve this success.
