If you have read the book ‘SD Burman: The World of His Music’ by Khagesh Dev Burman, you will come across several incidents that highlight the father-son relationship of SD and RD Burman. Both were legendary musicians in their own rights and no doubt the son was largely influenced by the father, yet they did not always agree to the music they made. Take for example the famous song Dum Maro Dum of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Sachin Dev Burman was terribly upset with his son Rahul Dev Burman's composition and even walked out of the studio when he heard the recording of the song.

Even though RD Burman’s music was very different from his father’s, he could not escape his influence, specially where he uses the folk renditions. Dev Anand, in spite of his long association with SD Burman, ignored him and appointed RD Burman as music director of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. As the writer mentions: “He was dismayed when he heard the recording of the song Dum Maro Dum in the studio. He was upset; he thought his son who carried his flag, whom he had taught music from childhood, had forsaken him.Was it a repudiation of inherited culture? Was it an attempt to disown his father? Rahul saw his father slowly walking out of the studio with his head bowed down. It looked as if a defeated king was retreating from battle.”
