Bengalis of Toronto GTA group celebrate Durga Puja through innovative livestreaming
The spirit of celebration stays bright in the hearts of the largest FB group Community of Canada, even during one of the most difficult times of our collective memory. Bengalis of Toronto GTA, a social media group of Toronto, Canada, is celebrating Durga Puja with a difference this year. Group members and guests, who live in greater Toronto area are taking part in a virtual celebration. This unique experience is conceptualized by group leaders Lopa Banerjee, Tapasree Nilima Dutta, Tamashi Banerjee and Papiya Sengupta under the guidance of Rathin Ghosh and supported by founding member Sudip Majumdar. The women power is also being celebrated thus.
When asked about the new experience, Lopa Banerjee said: ‘This was the best possible option keeping in mind the current Government directives to practice safe social distancing norms. The group has come up with an idea to entertain its members and encourage them to participate from their home. As the Durga Puja festival may not be held in person this year, group leaders are organizing social events online – a unique way of celebrating Durga Puja celebration.’
Online streaming from prominent local temples will allow people to be part of the festivities without being there physically. Stay home – stay safe – keep others safe – enjoy the essence of celebrations Stay Physically Distanced – Socially Bonded – Maintain a Sustainable Life.
In addition, Bengalis of Toronto GTA is promoting small or home businesses, women entrepreneurs, restaurant owners, and others who have been affected by the pandemic restrictions. This is translating into a free platform for small businesses for online events, and many have already started advertising. Some of the products include jewellery, painters, boutique clothing, and catering. There are no charge or fees for this service.
And the response is overwhelming. Around 2,000 people have already tuned in to the live streams. Bengalis of Toronto GTA is a Facebook group for Bengalis residing in greater Toronto area. Established in 2013, the group has grown to include many new members. The Bengalis of Toronto GTA group helps new immigrant Bengalis in Canada to settle down and connect with the community. It is an extended family away from home. The group keeps its members apprised of various social activities happening in the city. The mission of Bengalis of Toronto GTA is to help its members to connect with each other and promote talent through art and culture. The Bengalis of Toronto GTA platform also allows small businesses to showcase their products to members. This way, they can reach out to large number of customers. The admins of Bengalis of Toronto GTA have connections with various social clubs and institutions across the city. The group welcomes all Bengalis living in Toronto GTA.
