Bengal’s Silicon Valley dream gets a boost with Infosys’s New Development Centre – GetBengal story
On December 19, 2024, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated a development centre of IT giant Infosys in Kolkata’s New Town area. Built at a cost of ₹426 crore, the sprawling campus spans 50 acres and will have an employment potential of 4,000 IT professionals. This new facility is like a “New Year gift” to the state. The Chief Minister expressed optimism that Infosys’s presence would attract more IT companies to West Bengal.
The Infosys campus has been designed to foster innovation and inclusivity. The company will promote a gender-sensitive workplace, and 40% of its workforce will be women. Additional facilities such as a crèche and “Mom’s Nest” underline the modern and family-friendly work culture. The Infosys development centre adds to West Bengal’s growing IT landscape. The state is already a home to over 2,200 IT businesses, including TCS, Wipro, IBM, and Accenture.
To further strengthen the IT sector, the state government has introduced several forward-thinking policies such as the Broadband Policy (2020), Data Centre Policy (2021), and Cable Landing Station Policy (2023). These initiatives have laid a robust foundation for IT growth in the region.
The government's dream to create a Silicon Valley in New Town is another testament to its commitment to the IT sector. Spread over 200 acres, this project has the potential to generate 75,000 jobs with an investment of ₹27,000 crore.
During the inauguration, the hon'ble chief minister, Smt. Mamata Banerjee, extended an invitation to Infosys to participate in the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), scheduled for February 5-6, 2025. The BGBS is a platform to attract investments and rebuild West Bengal’s image as an industry-friendly state. Now the summit is expected to showcase Bengal’s potential across various sectors, including IT.
The inauguration of Infosys’s development centre marks a significant milestone in West Bengal’s journey towards becoming an IT hub.
